Opinion: The grand success of the GNI has been been possible  because of seamless coordination, infrastructure available at KIIT and mostly by the dedicated contribution by the student volunteers of KSMC.KIIT by this event has been able to leave an indelible mark on the pages of training of journalists in the state.

 Opinion: The data dialogue is a platform not only for the budding journalists but also the ones who have been in the field for  long time and also the academicians. The rapidly evolving technology and journalistic tools can be effectively used to further sharpen the skills of the journalists wonder 284 participants attended the programme from 30 different media houses and educational institutions. Initiating, planning and execution of the one day programme was a Herculean effort but was a holistic success at the end.

Opinion:We got an email from KIIT, and we registered for it. When we saw it was a google initiative, we were looking forward to it. We were hoping it to be a great event and it is. The presenter is explaining everything very clearly and I am also carrying the activities with her like Pinpoint, Google Trends, Flourish Studio and everything. These are skills which will help us a lot. For instance, we had a dissertation and if I had known about these things before, it would have been more helpful. So, overall it was a great experience.

Opinion:I liked the program very much today. Everyone should know such things. I'm very happy

coming here and learning so many new things and especially students of

Mass communication. It's a great opportunity for them. We got a great information

Opinion:Language to a journalist is like a sword to the warrior. It is a very essential tool in

journalism. Today’s workshop taught us various techniques to search for data,

transcribe voice notes in various languages and interpret it in various forms. It was

indeed a very insightful workshop.

was being discussed. It is a very helpful workshop because we are always looking

for data, it not that we are only collecting data, but we are also having to process it,

Reply: It was a wonderful experience today with Data leads. We got to know about few new websites and applications which would be extremely helpful in our day today life. The ones I liked and appreciated the most were cool sheets and google trading.

About Google News India Initiative Network

 Google News India (GNI) Initiative Network is an initiative led by Data Leads, a digital media and information organization to support journalists, fact-checkers and media educators across India in their fight against misinformation. Under its initiative  Data Dialogue, a pan-India data journalism training series, is being held in 20 cities around India beginning December 2022 in English and 10 Indian languages. 



The sessions will be led by data journalism experts and trainers from the GNI India Training Network and will focus on four key areas: data sourcing, cleaning, visualization and verification. Tools covered will include Google Trends, Google Sheet, Flourish and many others including Pinpoint,  a research tool part of Google Journalist Studio that empowers journalists to explore and analyze thousands of documents and files in multiple formats.

Fifth GNI Data Dialogue Workshop Session

 The Google News Initiative, in partnership with Data Leads, organized its fifth "Data Dialogue" workshop on January 13, 2023. It was a one-day workshop and was hosted by the KIIT School of Mass Communication at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Campus 7. The "Data Dialogue" is a pan-India data journalism training series that aims to organize this workshop in 20 different cities across India in English and 10 other Indian languages. This series of workshops is open to editors, reporters, and journalism students and aims at empowering its participants to unlock the powerful world of data journalism using the best of Google tools so that they are able to find, verify, and tell engaging stories. Also, it would assist in connecting with their audience in a better manner.

The workshop commenced with the lighting of the holy lamp by the dignitaries. This was followed by the opening remarks, which were given by Prof. Rajeev Kumar Panda, the Coordinator of the School of Mass Communication at KIIT as well as a Google News Initiative trainer. He introduced the respected dignitaries to the gathering. The present dignitaries were Prof. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty, Registrar, KIIT. Deemed to be University, Prof. Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director, IIMC Dhenkanal, Jyoti Singh Rathore, Deputy Program Manager at Data Leads, and Anoushka Dalmia, Data Journalism Trainer at Data Leads. Prof. Mrinal Chatterjee was the keynote speaker. He gave a speech on information, the finding and verification of data, and its relevance in journalism.

The sessions were led by data journalism expert and trainer Anoushka Dalmia from the GNI India Training Network. The workshop mainly focused on four key areas: data sourcing, data cleaning, data visualization, and data verification. The workshop taught the use of many powerful and handy tools, like Google Trends, Tabula, MS Excel or spreadsheets, Flourish, Google Pinpoint, Wayback Machine, and Wolfram Alpha. These tools can be used for extracting verified and accurate data from a data source. This workshop helped many budding data journalists and media educators.

 KIIT School of Mass Communication in partnership with Google News India (GNI)

Initiative Network, led by DataLEADS, organized Data Dialogue, an interactive

workshop exploring the intersection of data journalism and responsible data practices,

on 13th January, 2023.





The event featured a range of panel discussions, workshops, and talks from leading

experts in the field of data journalism and data ethics. Participants got the opportunity

to learn from and engage with these experts, as well as to network with their peers from

the media and journalism industry. Moreover, attendees learned about the latest trends

and best practices in data-driven journalism and fact-checking.



Some of the key topics that were explored at the event included: The role of data in

modern journalism; Best practices for using data responsibly in reporting; The ethical

considerations involved in collecting, using and sharing data; and The importance of

transparency and accountability in data journalism. The keynote address was given by

professor Mrinal Chatterjee. He said "Life is unpredictable and we should act

accordingly". He also narrated some of his life experiences to attract the audience

attention, Prof. Chatterjee talked about the advent of technology and innovation in data

journalism and how there should be certain engagement while doing observation in a

field of journalism. “Whatever data we collect, we have to connect it to reality,” said

Professor Mrinal Chatterjee.

Fifth GNI Data Dialogue Inaugural Ceremony

 The fifth Google News Initiative Data Dialogue, which was held on January 13, was inaugurated by Dr. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty, Registrar, KIIT-DU, and other dignitaries, including keynote speaker Prof. Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director, IIMC Dhenkanal, and Dr. Rajeev Kumar Panda, Course Coordinator, KIIT School of Mass Communication, Anushka Dalmia, Trainer, Google Data Leads, and Jyoti Singh Rathore, Program Manager, Google Data Leads.





Mr. Rajeev Kumar Panda, the course coordinator of the KIIT School of Mass Communication, made the inaugural speech. A welcome address was given by Mr. Jnyana Ranjan, Registrar of KIIT. In order to officially begin the ceremony, the dignitaries lit the lamp after this. Mr. Syed Nazakhat, Founder of Google News Initiative, stressed the significance of reliable data in our daily lives during his virtual address to the program. A keynote lecture was given during the event by Mr. Mrinal Chatterjee. With his brilliant storytelling style, he collected the attention of his audience and later told several stories to ground his words and check the observation of his audience. He very smartly taught the bidding journalist the essence of journalism, i.e., "connection to the soil." Anushka Dalmia, the lead data trainer, took the event forward and began the sessions that were scheduled.

Mr. Rajeev Kumar Panda, course coordinator, said about conducting events, "It is never easy to conduct an event, and especially when it's a collaboration event, it takes a lot of patience."
